Many "vitamin-like" nutrients are not recognised as true vitamins. Because our body can produce or synthesise them, they are not essential to our diet. Vitamin precursors are also called provitamins and are inactive until they are converted into vitamins by the body. Examples are choline, inositol, coenzyme Q10, alpha-lipoic acid, beta-carotene, quercetin, other flavonoids, and more.
The list of vitamins can be divided into two main groups. Based on their consistency we classify them into water-soluble vitamins and fat-soluble vitamins.
